Comparison of US and EU broadband penetration rates

Network Reliability and Infrastructure Analysis

This chart compares the broadband penetration rates of the member states (plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico) of the United States of America and the member countries of the European Union using the data from the US Federal Communications Commission (High-Speed Services for Internet Access Status as of June 30, 2007) and the EU Commission (European Electronic Communication Regulations and Markets 2007 Annex 2). The broadband penetration rate is calculated using the EU Commission method of taking the total number of broadband lines reported for each member country (or state) and dividing by the total population of each member country (or state).

The highest ranked EU member country, Denmark, is between the US states of Montana and New York. The lowest ranked US member territory, Puerto Rico, is between the EU countries of Slovakia and Poland. The lowest ranked US member state, Mississippi, is between Cyprus and Lithuania.

The US FCC report didn't break-out data for smaller US territories such as Guam.
